An upward, seemingly unstoppable trajectory in growth is seen everywhere we look in Sarasota. The national online insurance marketplace, Insurtech, reported that new units built in our metro area—which includes Sarasota and Manatee counties—increased by 24% between June, 2022, and June, 2023, and that our population increased nearly 7% between 2020 and 2022. For comparison, the national rate of population increase was 0.6%.

Our metro area reported the greatest number of new residential units in the country, with 218.37 under construction for every 100,000 residents. In the last year, eight projects in downtown Sarasota were approved, bringing 573 residential units and 3,692 square feet of financial institution space. Additionally, there are 14 projects within the downtown and major corridors—that is, Fruitville Road, U.S. 301 and U.S. 41—that are under construction. Within the city and those major corridors, there are also 14 projects under review and pending site plan approval.

Public Art Audio Tour Now Available

Want to know more about Sarasota’s diverse Public Art collection? There’s an app for that! Otocast, a location-based audio guide app, offers an interactive experience with a curated selection of our Public Art in downtown Sarasota. It’s like having a virtual Public Art tour guide. Each sculpture or “point of interest” on the app is accompanied by a brief audio commentary narrated by an individual familiar with the piece. Currently, 94 pieces are included in the Sarasota Public Art Otocast. The app is free and available at the Apple Store and Google Play.

Sarasota Bay Water Quality Best in 8 Years

Sarasota Bay’s water quality is the best it’s been in eight years. That’s what Executive Director of the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program Dave Tomasko said in his most recent director’s notes. Sarasota Bay, Roberts Bay, Little Sarasota Bay and Blackburn Bay will all be delisted for nutrient pollution. Simply put, the algae in Sarasota Bay has decreased so much that the water meets the standards to be considered “good quality.” Tomasko and scientists with Sarasota County agree that the most impactful reasons behind this good news are the improvements on the larger scale: upgraded stormwater and wastewater infrastructure. 

Just a Reminder to our Returning Longboat Key Residents

Just a reminder that car haulers are not permitted to load/unload on Gulf of Mexico Drive in center turn lane OR in the right-of-way. Loading and

unloading is allowed on Bay Isles Road across from Mediterranean Plaza if not blocking any driveways, or parking in a no parking zone.  Citations are automatic for infractions – Driver and vehicle owner could be ticketed.

If you live in an area with private roads, please check with your association to determine a safe and legal area for your car delivery/pick-up. These areas include Bay Isles, Longboat Club Road, and some neighborhoods that maintain private roads.
