I join most Sarasota residents in my overwhelming feeling of gratitude at how our beautiful piece of paradise weathered the storm. Businesses and restaurants are open, neighbor helping neighbor, and all with an overall sense of community spirit. Whatever we are currently dealing with in Sarasota and her islands, we know that it is a small inconvenience compared to our family and friends further south in the state. Folklore around these parts credits Sara de Sota, our Seminole Indian princess, for protection. This week, it’s easier to believe.

This table shows the impact on home prices of recent past destructive hurricanes that have hit the U.S. shores. Generally speaking, there do not appear to be significant differences between the impacted markets compared to the rest of the country after one or two years. Other factors are at play aside from hurricanes to these markets, but a quick snapshot shows the resilience of the American spirit in putting things back to normal after a major storm.
