Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium

This nonprofit, independent marine research organization is based on City Island in Sarasota with other campuses across Florida. The aquarium opened in 1980 and houses over 100 marine species. Different resident animals like sharks, river otters, and sea turtles are fed and trained during sessions for aquarium visitors to see.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

This 15-acre botanical garden is located on the grounds of the former home of Marie and William Selby in Sarasota. It has acquired the Historic Spanish Point as of May 2020, too. Because it has four separate bodies of water that interact together, currents run swiftly which means that no swimming is allowed here. However, many locals enjoy kayaking among the Mangroves here.

Lido Beach

Lido Beach is located on Lido Key, about ½ mile southwest of St. Armands Circle, on Ben Franklin Dr. It is very popular for tourists as many hotels, motels, and condos are located here. Residents describe it as more relaxed and less crowded than Siesta Key Beach.

Some of the beach’s amenities include restrooms, concessions, beach umbrella and chair rentals, a large parking lot, a heated swimming pool that is open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (additional fee applies), and outdoor showers.

North Lido Beach

North Lido Beach is located ¼ mile northwest of St. Armands Circle, on John Ringling Blvd. The park contains 49 acres of woods and walking trails and 22.5 acres of beach. Please note there are no lifeguards on duty here. It is great for hiking and for launching a canoe or kayak. There is a small parking area at the north end of the beach. Essentially, this is a private beach with no amenities.

South Lido Beach

Located on Ben Franklin Drive at the southernmost tip of Lido Key, the beach offers a skyline of downtown Sarasota and its Gulf. There is a picnic area and a nature trail. Some beach amenities include restrooms, cooking grills, a playground, a volleyball court, an observation tower and decks, a canoe trail, and on-duty lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
