On rare occasions, temperatures do fall to freezing. Bird Key has discernible rainy and dry seasons, with substantial rainfall between June and September and minimal precipitation from October through May. However, the area has plenty of sunny days to enjoy outdoor activities since most of the rain during the rainy season comes in the afternoons. Shopping and dining experiences are plentiful on Bird Key. Within walking distance, over Ringling Causeway bridge, is beautiful St. Armand’s Circle where many fine dining establishments and upscale boutiques are located. Here you’ll find sidewalk cafes, ice cream parlors, and coffee shops as well as art galleries, jewelers and specialty shops. Located in mainland Sarasota, Westfield Southgate shopping mall features stores such as Macy’s, Abercrombie and Fitch, Talbots, Loft, and Victoria’s Secret as well as a luxurious movie theater. Frequent events are also hosted at the island’s Bird Key Yacht Club where members can also enjoy boating, tennis, golf, and fitness. Bird Key and nearby regions are renowned for its fabulous beaches and resorts as well as its association with the Ringling family. John and Mable Ringling’s mansion remains in Sarasota as part of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, which also includes an art museum and circus museum. The city is home to the Sarasota Orchestra, which hosts a three-week music festival annually and the Sarasota Ballet. The Florida Studio Theatre has four theaters that provide a venue for plays, musicals, and other cultural events. The city’s annual Sarasota Film Festival draws independent films from around the globe.
